Overview of the learning process
Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow Vajyanti Shankar's Center for Science of Student Learning aims to build students' ability to conduct high-quality assessments and research in the learning process.
Like many other countries, India's education system attaches great importance to the number of students who succeed in school examinations and the marks obtained by them. But many schools pay little attention to what students are learning and how well they are learning. Furthermore, hardly any training is provided for the academic study and research of children's learning process. The capacity is also very low. Even where reviews are conducted in a modern way, it is a challenge to change the education system and improve the learning process by using the analysis and results of these reviews.
Vijayan Shankar is trying to change this situation. He is the founder and executive director of the Center for Science of Student Learning (CSSL). The institute was set up in New Delhi in 1959. The center helps state governments and education project financiers test students to find out what students are learning and the difference between different types of interventions.
Shankar says that one of the reasons why children do not perform well in the field of education is the emphasis on the process of memorization. This method of teaching emphasizes memorization rather than understanding. It also does not encourage innovation and creativity.
Most school exams focus on what was missed. "Teachers are never taught how to take better exams," says Shankar. That is, a review of what the students learned, not what the teachers taught. ”
Shankar's Center in India is working closely with nine state governments. The center monitors students' learning and trains them to use the results. The center also provides short-term training to state education officials to enhance their capacity in the sector. The Center is also in touch with the authorities of several other states to provide this facility to their officials as well. The Center is also considering extending its facilities to other developing countries.
The Center has developed a master's level education program for state government officers to train state government officials to initiate academic review work on their own and use the results to teach. Currently, six officers from the Education Department from Andhra Pradesh have registered for the three-year exercise. They spend 2% of their time studying. 3% of the time they spend on implementing what they have learned.
The program is sponsored and supervised by Penn Slovenia State University (where Shankar spent a year as a Phil Bright Humphrey Fellow in 1985) where a retired professor serves as a mentor and supervisor of the master's program. have been.
Shankar is credited with providing information and building trust for the establishment of the CSSL at the 6-month Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship. The US State Department-sponsored fellowship is an exchange program for young people and mid-year professional professionals.
This fellowship provided them with an in-depth understanding of the overview of the learning process. It also gave them a better understanding of professional, social, geographical and political challenges globally. It should be noted that the Humphrey Fellowship is awarded every year. Fellowship recipients are affiliated with six major US universities. For example, at Pennsylvania State University, Shankar met with scholarship recipients from other countries. "It gave us a chance to understand each other's point of view," she says. ''
In addition to conducting the review process and training State Education Department officers, CSSL also conducts research in the science of the learning process. The aim here is to better understand how educators can help people connected to the education sector and develop simple skills such as oneness, memory, self-image, emotional intelligence, and communication that can be better. Students can play an important role in the learning process.
In 2006, CSSL conducted a comprehensive analysis of the learning process and common problems encountered in the learning process of grade school students.
The review, sponsored by policymaker Niti Ayog, was sponsored by the World Bank. "State governments use the results of this review in teacher training programs to improve the teaching process and to decide whether students need correctional assistance," says Shankar. ''
With the rapid development of the Internet of Things, the demand for statistical science graduates is growing.
Statistical science is generally defined as the science of learning from data and estimating, controlling, and reporting uncertainties. Statistical science is also known as the science that provides guidance and information on important decisions to scientific and social developments. In this digital age, statisticians have a long way to go to discover new and innovative areas of study. According to an article published in Forbes Magazine, 2.9 quintal bytes of data are generated every day and the Internet of Things (extension of the Internet to everyday objects and physical devices) worldwide. With the rapid development of this speed is also accelerating.
Statistical programs focus on the principles and methods of collecting, sorting, analyzing, and interpreting data. Graduates typically pursue careers in business, education, industry, government, medicine, publishing, scientific research, and a variety of other fields. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average annual salary of a statistician in May was ۹۲ 4,000 (approximately Rs 500,000).
Now that statistical analysis and statistical analysis are becoming more important than ever in all global industries, such as the University of Minnesota (UMN) School of Statistics and the Department of Statistical Sciences at Baylor University in Texas. Courses are excellent examples of programs that Indian students can consider.
Description of information
Ancient and everlasting
Founded in 1967, UMN is one of the leading public research universities in the United States. UMN, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, has approximately 3 students from seven countries. Its faculty and students work with helpers on campus and around the world to generate meaning from a wide range of new information. This research not only requires recently developed statistical models and methods, but also the development of models, methods, and software that can meet new and emerging challenges.
Matthew Dengel, the administrator at UMN's School of Statistics, says: "Our courses are taught by world-renowned teachers, including the American Statistical Association, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the International Institute of Statistics. Many of these teachers have also been editors or assistant editors of important journals. In addition, several professors have received awards for their outstanding performance in teaching. ''
He added that the school, through its Institute for Research in Statistics and Its Applications (IRSA),
It also provides opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and professional development. "Students are encouraged to work as research assistants for the IRSA's Statistical Consulting Center, where they can work in the real world," says Dengel. Gain direct experience in solving challenges for customers. In addition, students have access to IRSA conferences, workshops, and short courses where their knowledge of statistics and data science is used for a variety of subjects to address the most important challenges of the 21st century. can go.''
Dengel explains that graduates of statistics have a successful career in fields such as business, education, industry, government, medicine, publishing, and scientific research.
New and innovative
Baylor University is a private university with more than 5,000 students. They include students from seven different countries. Although the university first introduced Ph.D. and Master of Arts (now Master of Science) degrees in statistics in the year 2000, the undergraduate bachelor of science degree in statistics was introduced in the year 2012. Since then, the number of students interested in the program has increased. A study has also been included in the statistics to provide an attractive alternative to students entering graduate school or looking for professional opportunities.
The department provides standardized statistical guidance at all levels to assist in the discovery and transmission of statistical knowledge. It prepares scholars, skilled professionals and educated leaders who are sensitive to the needs of the society.
"It's a program that focuses on both theory and methodology," says Jane S. Hill, a senior lecturer in statistical science and director of the undergraduate program. It strongly emphasizes modern methods of calculation. Baylor University's mission is to equip men and women with the skills to lead the world and provide services. ''
